Vitamin B3 did not work

My wife got the results of her cholesterol test it was 9.2 so the vitamin B3 did not seem to work, she now needs to take statins and could be on them for the rest of her life to protect her from heart attack, clots and stroke. I would like her to take garlic oil 4000mg per day first to try and bring down the cholesterol naturally however I think she is going to follow her GP's advice and take the statins. Also I am worried about my own cholesterol as I to am taking the vitamin B3 however I am taking 2000mg of garlic oil supplements. Will let you know what happens.
