My own experience in curing illness, infection and viruses.
I am posting this blog not to promote my own blog but as information on my own experiences with regard to illness, disease, infections and viruses. If you have been following my blog you may be aware of the confidence I have in high doses of vitamin c. The recommended dosage of vitamin c in the UK for a healthy adult is 60mg, which I regard as far too low. I usually take 500mg per day as a supplement to maintain good health, however if I feel unwell I will up this amount until I feel better.
Now I am not a doctor, so please seek advice before taking high doses of vitamin c. You may find the following story interesting.
Last Thursday I felt very tired and had just started with a sore throat I had already taken my daily dose of vitamin c (500mg), I then took another 1,000mg, however by lunch time I was feeling very hot, as if I had a temperature. I was feeling quite unwell so I took another 2,000mg of vitamin c and had to take to my bed. By the evening I took a further 2,000mg of vitamin c, and then went to bed again.
By the next morning I was feeling fine, no sore throat or temperature, and I was not feeling tired. This may have happened anyway, however it is not the first time this has happened, and my own opinion is that the high dosage of vitamin c is boosting my immune system and fights of the illness very quickly.

Anthem by Leonard Cohen: Words of Wisdom
I had dinner with friends the other night, and the background music switched to a Leonard Cohen song: Anthem. It is impossible to ignore his coarse, earthy voice, and we all stopped chatting to listen. What we heard in the chorus of this song was a combination of prayer, blessing, mantra, forgiveness, commandment, and lament.

"Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything;
That's how the light gets in.
Ring ring the bell. Ring the bell."

More ways to protect yourself from swine flu
Well before we start please don't kiss any pigs!. There is no chance for this young man in the above image, or is it a new cure?Doctors’ surgeries are reporting a huge increase in the number of cases of Swine flu. But put these numbers into perspective, millions of people who will probably get swine flu, most will only experience mild symptoms, so dont panic.
Here is what you can do to help protect yourself. The most important thing is to make sure your immune system is in top condition. You can improve its condition by eating the following foods: Shellfish, chicken, liver, oily fish, wheatgerm, high antioxidant vegetables and fruit such as oranges, carrots, and sweet potato, yogurt, sunflower seeds and seaweed.
The best supplements to use are vitamin c, ensure that you are using a good brand name, and that is 1000mg.
The trace element Zinc has been found to boost natural immunity against disease, and also aids the excretion of of toxic cadmium found in cigarette smoke.
Garlic too can help boost the immune system, it contains a potent sulpher compound Allicin. In cream form Allicin was used in clinical trials, and found to kill the so-called super bug (MRSA), which is resistant to antibiotics.
Other help for the immune system is to make sure you stay hydrated, and drink enough water. Get plenty of rest. Try to reduce contact with substances that increase the load on the bodies defences such as tobacco smoke, car fumes, and excess alcohol.
If you catch flu stay at home and rest. Drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol. If you cannot eat, try chicken soup it is known to be quite good if not feeling well.

The amazing Artichoke
The artichoke is elegant and delicious and has been eaten as a vegetable since Roman times, so has long been known for its nutritional value.Extracts of the leaves and roots were once used to treat arteriosclerosis, jaundice and post-operative anaemia. Artichokes provide a number of vitamins and minerals; they can also stimulate bile evacuation and act as a diuretic. In some cultures the artichoke is considered to be an aphrodisiac.
A study in Germany in 1980 revealed that Artichoke substantially lowered volunteer's blood fats and cholesterol.

Other benefits of the Artichoke are it can reduce fluid retention, and may help steady blood sugar levels.

Home Alone
So I am hurting, alone. And he is worrying, alone.
But now, we are older and more experienced, and have lived through the darkest days of the pain, and through innumerable bursts of relapses over the past ten years.
Before he left he stocked the refrigerator with apples, and broccoli, and chicken, and Chinese take-out, and even cut up a whole watermelon into chunks. He set up videoconferencing on my laptop (his already had this capability). I made dates with friends to talk to and walk with and have me over for dinner. I upped my meds to dull the sharper edges of the pain.
Richard and I talk and text and tweet each other. It's some comfort. but it's hard on both of us to be hurting and worrying, alone.
How do you manage the daily tasks and find comfort when you and your sweetie are apart?

Medicinal uses of Cayenne red Pepper
Cayenne red pepper is used all over the world in cooking. Cayenne is very hot so should not be given to children under the age of two.It is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine, and has warming and mucus-relieving qualities.
The fruits, or hot peppers, commonly known as chillis, contain capsaicin, a stimulant that helps control pain and dissolve blood clots. Chillis can stimulate the appetite and digestion, release phlegm and increase sweating thus helping to boost the immune system.
In moderation, powdered chillis can help heal stomach and duodenal ulcers, promoting tissue growth through the release of histamine.
Cayenne pepper is also effective in the treatment of arthritis, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney infections and respiratory problems.

Caretaker Stress Affects Health of Partner with Heart Failure
A recent study that appears in the July/August 2009 issue of Heart and Lung affirms in a broad sense what anyone in a committed relationship, particularly a marriage, already knows from experience: one spouse’s mental or physical health ailments can, and often do, tax the other spouse.
This study is particularly concerned with the implications of this dynamic when one spouse has some form of heart failure (HF), a chronic progressive condition that occurs when the heart muscle can’t pump enough blood through the heart to meet the body’s blood and oxygen demand.
The study found that a spouse’s distress had substantially greater impact on the HF patient’s overall health and the course of the patient’s illness than the reverse scenario. Considering the fact that 5.7 million Americans have HF and well over half a million new cases are diagnosed each year, this is concerning.

Natural pain control for cancer and chemortherapy.
A Hungarian doctor, Joseph Beres developed a complex supplement of seventeen minerals claiming to have a dramatic pain-relieving effect on a wide range of conditions, including cancer. It is called Beres Drops plus.Another controversial but more widely available supplement for cancer is ground shark cartilage. This claims to work over a period of some weeks by inhibiting and reducing the growth of cancer cells.
Cats claw (Uncaria Tomentosa) is a herb that has been hailed in recent years as an immune system booster and has been found to be particularly beneficial in the treatment of cancer and AIDS. The herb is currently being researched in several countries. It is available in health food stores as a tea or in capsule form.
Herbal medicine has a number of other herbs that can control the pain of cancer depending on the symptoms of the individual, these include Jamaican dogwood, Bloodroot, Red clover and Pacific island potato. For the best advice see a qualified herbalist.
The homeopathic remedy Nux vomica 6c taken three time daily for a month is said to relieve the discomfort of chemotherapy, particularly nausea.

Use antibiotics only if your desperate
The general advice from your doctor will be that you don't need antibiotics for a cold or even flu, unless there are complications, and this is good advice. Antibiotics if overused are not good for you and if you do overuse them they simply will not work.My wife told me an interesting story yesterday, and this is true. Her friends mother, who is in her early seventies has been lucky enough to have never taken antibiotics in her life. Unfortunately due to a disease she has had to have part of her foot removed. She was given antibiotics to prevent infection, but because she has never had antibiotics before the healing process has been amazing, and she is feeling much better.
S0 the moral to the story is don't take antibiotics unless you are desperate. If you do need to take antibiotics it may be better to eat live yogurt after you have completed the course, as the antibiotics will kill off the good bacteria in your gut as well as the bad.

Simple help for dementia and alzheimer's disease.
A few cups of coffee a day may be all that is needed to reverse the effects of Alzheimer's disease, new research suggests.Scientists have uncovered powerful evidence that caffeine not only helps to stave off the disease but can treat it.
They hope soon to follow up the initial results from animal experiments with human patient trials.
US neuroscientist Dr Gary Arendash, who led the research, said: "The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable 'treatment' for established Alzheimer's disease, and not simply a protective strategy.
"That's important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people. It easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process."
A key aspect of Alzheimer's is sticky clumps of abnormal protein in the brain called beta amyloid plaques.
Mice with a rodent equivalent of the disease showed a 50% reduction in levels of amyloid protein in their brains after scientists spiked their drinking water with caffeine. The change was reflected in their behaviour as the mice developed better memories and quicker thinking.
Dr Arendash's team studied 55 mice genetically engineered to develop dementia symptoms identical to those of Alzheimer's as they aged.
At the age of 18 to 19 months - around 70 in human years - the mice were showing signs of memory impairment. The researchers then gave half the mice drinking water containing caffeine while the other half continued to drink ordinary water.
Humans receiving an equivalent dose for their body weight would be consuming 500 milligrams of caffeine - or five eight ounce cups of ordinary coffee - a day. The same amount of caffeine can be obtained by drinking two cups of strong "coffee shop" coffee, 14 cups of tea, or 20 cola drinks.
